Can Fibre Help With Anal Gland Problems in Dogs?
Share
If you've ever had to make an emergency trip to the vet for your dog's anal glands, you'll know how unpleasant — and expensive — it can be. Scooting, licking, a fishy smell that won't go away. It's one of the most common complaints dog owners face, and one of the most misunderstood.
The good news is that for many dogs, the answer isn't a vet visit — it's fibre.

How do anal glands work?
Dogs have two small scent glands either side of their bottom. In a healthy dog, these express naturally every time they pass a firm, well-formed stool — the pressure of the stool does the job automatically. When stools are soft, loose or inconsistent, that pressure isn't there, the glands don't empty properly, and problems follow.
Where does fibre come in?
Soluble fibre — particularly psyllium husk — absorbs water in the gut and adds bulk and firmness to stools. Firmer stools mean more consistent natural pressure on the anal glands with every bowel movement. For many dogs, simply adding a good quality fibre supplement to their daily diet is enough to resolve recurring anal gland issues without any intervention.
It's not a miracle cure, and dogs with severely impacted or infected glands always need veterinary attention first. But as a daily preventive measure, fibre is one of the most underused tools in a dog owner's kit.
What our customers say
We hear this regularly from PetCol customers — dogs who were visiting the vet every few weeks for manual expression are now managing naturally through diet and daily fibre support alone. It's one of the most rewarding pieces of feedback we receive.
